Dates - A Sweet Miracle of Nature

Fat free, cholesterol-free and sodium-free, dates deliver a dose of carbohydrates that is readily and easily absorbed by the body, providing a quick energy boost with a count of only 23 calories per fruit. Thanks to a high concentration of naturally occurring sugars, dates may very well be the world’s oldest form of candy. Within that naturally sweet package, they pack a powerful nutritious punch. They are also one of the planet’s most complete foods, and few fruits can boast such a myriad health benefits. It is not surprising, then, that their importance as a dietary supplement was well known to the earliest desert people, who sustained themselves for generations on a limited diet of the fruit taken with camel or goat milk. Modern science has confirmed the health value of dates. An analysis of micronutrient content reveals a remarkable array of vitamins and minerals, most notably vitamin A and numerous B-complex vitamins (thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B-6 and pantothenic acid), necessary for the building of tissue and muscle.

The healing attributes of dates were also recognized by the first civilizations, recorded by ancient Egyptians, Greek physicians and Islamic scholars. They have been used in folk medicine for the treatment of intestinal disorders, digestive complaints, bronchial problems, blood pressure regulation, liver ailments, tumors and fertility issues. In the Arabic world, the Western adage “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” might well be rephrased as “seven dates a day keeps the doctor away.” It’s little wonder that dates have long been considered a source of rejuvenation. Quite simply, a handful of sweet, sun-ripened fruit offers the best of both worlds: a moment of instant gratification and a step on the road to a healthy lifestyle.

The Bateel Approach - From Farm to Boutique

With a carefully implemented policy of traditional farming practices, Bateel’s cultivation techniques are kept as close to nature as possible — emphasizing natural methods over chemical intervention. When the first date flowers appear, the Bateel team starts to pollinate and train the flowers and inspect for any signs of infestation or disease. Once the dates begin to form, branches are thinned, cutting away about 50 percent of the fruit. This reduction in number allows air circulation and space so that the remaining fruits may grow to their ultimate potential. As they become more vulnerable and soft, the maturing dates are covered in well-ventilated cloth that will keep out birds and insects. This approach results in impressively low contamination rates, while avoiding the use of pesticides. Finally, the dates are hand-picked in multiple stages over the course of the harvest season. Between pruning, thinning, protective bagging and harvesting, Bateel farm staff scale the palm trees a dozen times per season to ensure a successful crop.

In order to ensure that each individual fruit is handled with respect due to a premium product, Bateel has made a significant investment in state-of-the-art cleaning and storage technology in its specially designed date processing plant. The dates are cleaned and graded to match stringent standards for size, color, translucency, proportions, and skin condition. Once tenderly packed for transport, they are stored in a climate-controlled environment of -10 °C to 4 °C, which halts any further ripening until the moment of consumption.
